Destination Honeymoon Closeup: French Polynesia, More Affordable Than You Think
I often hear from wedding couples that they dream of going to the French Polynesian Islands, yet they think the islands are too expensive for their honeymoon. In fact, French Polynesia can be surprisingly affordable, because the islands offer a wide range of choices and budget packages. The real challenge is picking the perfect island for you.
Nestled deep in the South Pacific Ocean, these islands are unique, beautiful, and offer some of the best diving in the world. Divers love the many small islands with easy access to the clear waters. Islands like Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moreau and Rangiroa are legendary, and there are many more, each offering something a little different.
The main attraction on most of the islands are the over-the-water bungalows, which are incredibly photogenic (such as those at the Four Seasons Bora Bora, above). They are secluded, quiet and perfect for that intimate, picture-perfect honeymoon. Another option which is one of my favorites are the cottages on the beach. Each cottage is just steps away from the ocean. You can just open your French doors and step onto the sand and then into the warm tropical water.
Small cruise companies also sail the islands, and are a great way to experience most of them. These small ships have the ability to enter coves that larger ships just can’t access. Many times you might anchor off a small cove and the staff will fix lunch right on the beach. Waiters are in the water offering your favorite beverage served from a floating bar.
The only challenge of a French Polynesian honeymoon is the time it takes to get there compared to the Caribbean or Mexico. Even this is easily overcome with help from your travel agent. Overnight flights from Los Angeles International Airport fly daily into Papeete, Tahiti, the nexus of all international flights into French Polynesia. From Papeete, you can reach all of these wonderful islands.
