Destination Wedding Closeup: Mykonos and Santorini
Among all of the great destinations I get to visit, one pair of islands stands out: the Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini in the Aegean Sea. When you arrive on either island, you feel a sense of calm. Most people call this “island time,” when everything seems to slow down, and you begin to notice the white buildings and the blue of the sky and sea. It’s really magical.
Both islands have hotels built hugging the steep hillsides. Many times, getting to your hotel can be a challenge on the narrow roads, but it’s worth the time and effort, because the views from your room can be spectacular.
Walking around the towns, you find local merchants selling everything from coffee mugs to bathing suits. One of the most fun day trips you can do is rent an ATV and tour the island. The beaches are out away from town, and are great for playing in the water or sun bathing. The evenings can be just as much fun, because the party might not stop. You also can do side trips from both islands and visit other, smaller islands that played a large part in ancient Greek times.
When do you go to Mykonos or Santorini? These are mainly summer destinations, because the islands largely shut down tourism services from October to May. Many of the hotels close for the winter, and the ferries and airlines stop at the same time.
But if your wedding date is any time from late spring to early fall, either of these beautiful islands makes for a great destination wedding! During the season you can arrange for a wonderful outdoor wedding, and because of the many different hotel types, it’s easy to find the perfect budget package for your guests.
